LISEF – Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (DCYSC)

 For students in grades 6, 7, or 8

·        The LISEF – DCYSC will take place on Monday, March 17th, 2008, at the Crest Hollow Country Club, Woodbury, New York. Check-in will start at 8:00AM. Judging will take place between 8:45 AM and Noon. The Awards Ceremony is expected to end by 1:00 – 1:30 PM.

·        REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 27, 2008. All participants must be students affiliated with a Nassau or Suffolk County educational institution.

·        Each school may send up to four (4) projects to the Long Island DCYSC. Students may compete as individuals, or as members of a team (maximum number of students on a team is three (3)).

·        Each school must send at least one teacher who will act as a judge at the DYSC.

·        The fee for the DCYSC is $30 per student. The LISEF – DCYSC is BOCES aid-able. This means that your school district can pay for the application fee to Discovery Fair through BOCES. 

·        10% of the students at the LISEF– DCYSC will be named Regional Finalists and will be nominated to the National DCYSC. The nominated students will win a certificate and a lapel pin. 
Regional Finalists may enter the National DCYSC. They will be given an entry form that should be sent to directly to Science Service by June, 2008. All who enter the National DCYSC will receive a T-shirt.  Four hundred students will be selected as National Semifinalists and forty of these students will be named as National Finalists. 

·        National Prizes and Scholarships:  The four hundred National Semifinalists will receive certificates of recognition and a gift certificate to the Discovery Store. Forty Finalists will win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC and a share of $100,000 in scholarships.  The top winner will receive $20,000. How Does My School Participate?

·        Complete the registration form and fax it to LISEF.

·        Have students conduct a science research project and create a poster presentation about their findings.

·        Come to the DCYSC at the Crest Hollow Country Club on Monday, March 17, 2008.

·        Send at least one teacher who will act as a judge at the DYSC.
